The Korean 10-Step Routine

Korean skincare is known worldwide for its focus on long-term skin health and natural radiance. The famous 10-step routine isn’t about doing “everything,” but about listening to your skin and building a routine that really makes a difference.

We've broken down the routine into clear steps so you can easily adapt it to your skin type, lifestyle and season. During drier periods, more steps may be needed, while skin often does well with fewer in the summer. The goal is always the same, hydrated, balanced and radiant skin all year round.

A basic principle of Korean skincare is to apply products from lightest to richest consistency. This maximizes the absorption of active ingredients while encapsulating moisture and nourishment into the skin.

10-STEP ROUTINE, STEP BY STEP

Step 1 – Oil-based cleaning
The routine starts with an oil cleanse to dissolve makeup, SPF, sebum, and other oil-based impurities. Massage the oil into dry skin using gentle circular motions, then add a little water to emulsify the oil and rinse off with lukewarm water.

Step 2 – Water-based cleaning
Follow with a gentle foam or cream cleanser to remove any remaining dirt and sweat. This step deeply cleanses the skin without disrupting its natural balance and is suitable for both morning and evening.

Step 3 – Exfoliation
Exfoliate your skin 2-3 times a week to remove dead skin cells, keep pores clear, and improve your skin's ability to absorb subsequent products. Always choose a gentle exfoliant that won't irritate your skin.

Step 4 – Tones
Toners are applied directly after cleansing to restore the skin's pH balance and add moisture. Gently pat the product in with your hands, no cotton is needed. In Korean skincare, toners are primarily used to soften and prepare the skin.

Step 5 – Essence
Essence is the heart of the Korean routine. It has a light consistency and actively works to hydrate, renew and improve skin texture, while preparing the skin for the next step.

Step 6 – Serum & Ampoules
This step targets specific skin needs such as pigmentation, fine lines, dryness or acne. Serums and ampoules contain highly concentrated active ingredients and should be chosen based on your skin type.

Step 7 – Sheet mask
Sheet masks are used when the skin needs extra care. The mask is applied for 10–20 minutes and provides an intense boost of moisture and active ingredients.

Step 8 – Eye cream
The skin around the eyes is thin and sensitive. An eye cream helps moisturize, protect and prevent dryness lines and signs of fatigue.

Step 9 – Moisturizer or night mask
The moisturizer acts as a protective layer that locks in all the previous steps and prevents moisture from evaporating from the skin.

Step 10 – Sun protection (daytime)
Sunscreen is one of the most important steps in Korean skincare. Daily use protects the skin from UV radiation that causes premature aging, pigmentation, and damage.
